monday favorites: part one

i don't mind mondays. in fact, i like them. i like having a fresh start. i like sending chip and eve off into the world and holing in with the two littles. i do laundry and clean the house, ruthie plays games and draws while charlie goes about his business of scooting, crawling, intensely searching for paper - any paper - to shove into his wet mouth. nap times come and go, lunch is consumed, a treat is made before we three head out to reclaim the fourth from school. more drawing, more playing, more cleaning, cooking, welcoming daddy home, eating, playing, planning, singing, two games (or three. . . or 12 if the girls can get us to agree) and finally, putting to bed.

i like the monday routine. and i'm about to like it even more. starting now. favorite mondays. or monday favorites. random things, any things, that fall into my wide category of "favorite." let's begin.

chip and i rang in the new year reading excerpts from our childhood journals to each other. we laughed and laughed and got embarrassed a bit (or a lot) as we revisited our old selves. . . chip's obsession with he-man toys. my obsession with proving my little brother got everything he wanted. our reflections on life as 12-year-olds. . . the gems in these journals are incredible.

chip's journals include a lot of drawings and occassionally, my favorite, the beginnings of very promising comic books. comic books like TIMBERLOCK: MAN OF THE WOODS. amazing. i can hardly stand the suspense. or the erased pencil lines. few things are more adorable than watching people diligently erase, flip their pencil over and try again. especially-13-year-olds who grow up to be my husband.

Timberlock? Man of the Woods? Are you kidding me! Chip, how is it that this went nowhere? You could have your own Happy Meals by now.

I tried to get bobby to defend himself and argue that he didn't get everything that he wanted, but he laughed and then said that he didn't have anything to say... Does that mean that he did in fact get everything that he wanted?? I think possibly...

Chip was a pretty talented 12-13 year old... I couldn't draw like that now if my life depended on it!

reading the words "TIMBERLOCK: MAN OF THE WOODS" caused me to produce a hearty belly laugh. i must know more about TIMBERLOCK. what does a man of the woods want with a briefcase, anyway? the suspense! if not a happy meal, couldn't this at least be chip's halloween costume this year?

I must have "Timberlock Man of the Woods." Mostly to see how it stacks up against my 3 page graphic novel, "The Cobras vs The Street Kidz Posse"

bryan and i have been laughing and laughing and laughing at this. and you are brave - i have a journal in which i confess that i am in love with a guy named greg brady, and it would be hard for me to go public with it, even though i was only six when i wrote it.

"TIMBERLOCK! Look out! There's a guy with a disproportionately sized pistol aimed right at your head!"

After giving this some more thought, I've been really curious to find out more about TIMBERLOCK. What are his superpowers, besides being able to run at a 45-degree angle to the ground? What is the story of his birth? If that was him in the Louisiana hot tub, I can only conclude he came from deep within the Atchafalaya swamp. If that's the case, I would truly fear him.

(Chip, I'm jealous of your creative prowess. If you could only see the lame Teenage Mutant Ninja turtle drawings I was plagiarizing in '89).

You guys are the coolest! I've been saving the mass number of books Jonah has made the last few months. I hope someday his wife thinks they are cool too!

I love that you enjoy Mondays....if I can get everything going on Mondays the whole week runs smooth.
